We have planted a Tactical Sound Garden in the Rainforest Green. The sounds contains in it were created by Conservatorium composition students under the direction of Dr. Stephen Cronin. In order to hear it, or plant your own sounds (mp3 files) you must download the Tactical Sound Garden application.
Upon entering the sound garden, you must connect to a local TSG server and download the small TSG client application along with a library of sounds. As you move through the sound garden, the client application periodically identifies your position within the geographic limits of the physical location. This positioning information is fed to the 3D audio engine running on the client, which subsequently outputs a real-time audio mix specific to your current location.
To plant sounds, you must either uploads sounds recorded or stored on your laptop, or selects from existing sounds in the library. You may then set the parameters for sound playback. The TSG client identifies your current position in the sound garden, and sends this information along with your sound file and playback parameters to the TSG server. Your sound and its parameters are subsequently broadcast to all participants currently in the garden.
To prune sounds, you may select a sound in the garden and modifies any of the parameters of that sound. These modifications are sent to the server, which in turns broadcasts these modifications to all participants currently in the garden.
Because of device limitations, those with PDAs will only be able to listen to the Garden sounds.
The Tactical Sound Garden Toolkit is a project by Mark Shepard in collaboration with Fiona Murphy (Field Recording, Sound Production), Achint Thomas (Programming), Viral Modi (Programming), Ajeya Krishnamurthy (Programming), and Aaron Flynt (Programming). It is funded in part by the New York State Council of the Arts and the departments of Architecture and Media Study at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York.
